Caroline County

Welcome to "The Green Garden County", the heart of Maryland's beautiful Eastern Shore!

Caroline County was created in 1773 from Dorchester and Queen Anne's counties. The county is named for Lady Caroline Eden, the wife of Maryland's last colonial governor, Robert Eden (1741 - 1784). Lady Caroline was the daughter of Charles Calvert, Fifth Lord Baltimore, and the sister of Frederick Calvert, Sixth Lord Baltimore.

Denton, seat of Caroline County, is on the Choptank River and generally near the geographic center of the county and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Denton remains today a trade and governmental center with a growing industrial base. It continues to benefit from its centrality in a rich agriculture area and from its location on good land and water transportation arteries.

The county is made up of the following towns: Denton, Preston, Federalsburg, Ridgely, Greensboro, Goldsboro, Henderson, and Marydel. You will find links to some of these towns, on the side.
